This photograph shows a general view of Coonoor, a tea plantation town in Tamil Nadu not far from the former British summer capital of Ootacamund. Such hill stations in Kerala and Tamil Nadu became the favoured summer retreats of the British in south India during the nineteenth century because of their cool climate away from the heat of the plains. The major attraction of Coonoor is Sim's Park. Founded in the mid-nineteenth century, it was planted with various species of botanical interest including tree-ferns, giant rhododenrons and three hundred varieties of roses.

Picturesque Bridge over the Rungnoo below Ging - Darjeeling 1865

Photograph of a bridge near Ging, taken by Samuel Bourne in the 1860s. Samuel Bourne's photographs display a compositional elegance which appealed to Victorian notions of the ‘picturesque’; strategically framed landscapes of rugged mountain scenery, forests, rivers, lakes and rural dwellings. Bourne chose his routes with care, planning his itineraries based on the latest maps, the locations of renowned geological features, glaciers, high passes, the sources of major rivers, unusual land forms with fossils and places of archaeological note.

Dubrajpur Rocks, Birbhum, Bengal - 1870

The rocks are situated south of the village of Dubrajpur in the Birbhum District, Bengal. They are huge picturesque outcrops of granite and gneiss (composed of glassy quartz, pink and grey feldspar and black mica) which cover an area of a square mile. In the centre is a block of granite 60 feet in height united to a mass of gneiss which adheres to it at an angle of 45 degrees. The summit commands a fine view of the surrounding countryside as far as Parasnath and the Rajmahal and Panchet Hills.

Fateh Rahbar Gun (the guide-to-victory cannon) in Golconda Fort, Hyderabad, Telangana - c1888

The famous Fateh Rahbar (the guide-to-victory cannon) gun positioned atop the Petla Burj of the historical Golconda Fort. This cannon was used by the Aurangazeb Army to storm the Golconda Fort and capture the last Qutb Shahi ruler, Abul Hasan Tana Shah in 1687.
