Details of mouldings on Panchanana and Siddheshvara Temples, Burdwan District, Barakar, Burdwan District - 1872
Photograph of the mouldings on Temples Nos. 4 and 5 (Panchanana and Siddheshvara Temples), Barakar, Burdwan District, taken by Joseph David Beglar in 1872-73. In the report he wrote at that time Beglar said, "Temple No. 4 stands by itself...The mouldings of the basement are...unadorned with sculptures, higher and bolder, and altogether more pleasing...Close to this temple, and facing it, stands temple No. 5...Externally, the tower differs considerably from those of the other here, and, ...surpasses them in beauty and richness, though the sculpture details are not so profuse or minute. The basement mouldings, too, are bold, elegant, and simple." The Siddheshvara temple or temple No.5 can be seen in the foreground, on the left of this photograph and was built in the ninth century. The temple on the right, the Panchanana temple or temple no.4, was built in the sixteenth century to a similar design.
