Portrait of Sarojini Naidu - Delhi 1946

Sarojini Naidu (née Chattopadhyaya) (13 February 1879 – 2 March 1949), also known by the sobriquet The Nightingale of India, was a child prodigy, Indian independence activist and poet. Naidu was the first Indian woman to become the President of the Indian National Congress and the first woman to become the Governor of Uttar Pradesh state. She was the daughter of Aghorenath Chattopadhyaya.
She was active in the Indian Independence Movement, joining Mahatma Gandhi in the Salt March to Dandi, and then leading the Dharasana Satyagraha after the arrests of Gandhi, Abbas Tyabji, and Kasturba Gandhi.

Yusuf Meherally - Indian Freedom Fighter and Ex-Mayor of Bombay at his home - 1946

Yusuf Meherally (September 23, 1903– July 2, 1950) was an Indian freedom fighter and socialist leader. He was elected Mayor of Bombay in 1942 while he was imprisoned in Yerawada Central Prison.
He was the founder of the National Militia, Bombay Youth League and the Congress Socialist Party and played a role in several peasant and trade union movements. He coined the term 'Simon Go Back'.
He coined the term "quit india"and was part of the Quit India Movement along with Mahatma Gandhi for India's last nationwide campaign for independence from the British Empire.

Surya Sen, Bengali Freedom Fighter - Early 20th Century


Surya Sen (22 March, 1894 – 1 December, 1934) was a Bengali freedom fighter (against British rule) who is noted for leading the 1930 Chittagong armoury raid In Chittagong of Bengal in British India (now in Bangladesh). Sen was a school teacher by profession and was popularly called as Master Da.

Portrait of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar - Indian Freedom Fighter and Inventor of Hindutva

Vināyak Dāmodar Sāvarkar (May 28, 1883 – February 26, 1966) was an Indian freedom fighter, revolutionary and politician. He was the proponent of liberty as the ultimate ideal. Savarkar was a poet, writer and playwright. He launched a movement for religious reform advocating dismantling the system of caste in Hindu culture, and reconversion of the converted Hindus back to Hindu religion. Savarkar created the term Hindutva, and emphasized its distinctiveness from Hinduism which he associated with social and political disunity. Savarkar’s Hindutva sought to create an inclusive collective identity.
