The Kashmir Gate at the northern end of the city now known as Old Delhi was built in 1835 by Major Robert Smith. The British built other bastions as well in the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan's original city walls (reigned 1628-58). This gate in particular was the scene of desperate fighting when the British retook Delhi during the Indian Uprising of 1857, when it was blown up.
