The catamaran is a log raft or float ( from the Tamil word 'maran' meaning log and 'kattu' meaning tied), consisting of two, three or more logs tied together side by side, the middle one being longer than the others. They have traditionally been used in Madras and on the Coromandel coast, for communication with the shore.
