View of the Bunderpunch Peak in Yamunotri - Himalayas 1860's

Bunderpoonch peak was named after the legend that Hanuman, the Monkey God, after setting the city of Lanka on fire with his burning tail, extinguished the flame on his tail here, hence the name Bunderpunch (monkey tail). Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna river which emerges from a frozen lake of ice and glaciers on the Kalinda Parvat at an altitude of 4421 meters.

Gomukh, the terminus or snout of the Gangotri Glacier, from where Bhagirathi River originates, is one of the primary sources of the Ganges River. The place is situated at a height of 13,200 ft. It is one of the largest in the Himalayas with an estimated volume of over 27 cubic kilometers.

Gangotri Glacier and the Snowy Himalayan Mountains - 1865

Gangotri Glacier is located in Uttarkashi District, Uttarakhand, India in a region bordering China. This glacier, one of the primary sources of the Ganges, is one of the largest in the Himalayas with an estimated volume of over 27 cubic kilometers. The glacier is about 30 kilometres (19 miles) long and 2 to 4 km (1 to 2 mi) wide. Around the glacier are the peaks of the Gangotri Group.

The Feathered Life of Rajasthan - Documentary by Films Division 1981



The documentary explores the Ghana bird sanctuary, the Ranthambhor game sanctuary and the desert regions of Bikaner and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan where a variety of birds from various parts of the world and India come. The lordly Siberian cranes fly in from Siberia after breaking their journey at Kabul. Out of the around two thousand surviving members of the species, one section spends the winter in China while another camp with their young ones for five long months at Bharatpur. Other birds in these areas include the Black Necked Stork, the Pintail, the Adjutant Stork, the Old World Spoonbill, the Egret, the White Ibis, the Darter, the Little Dabchik, the Cormorant and the Pheasant.
